What Is Ion Plating?
Ion plating is a technology developed by NASA in the United States during the 1950s as part of space exploration research. It later spread worldwide as a method to enhance the durability of cutting tools and molds.
In a vacuum environment, metal is vaporized using heat or plasma energy, combined with reactive gases to form a ceramic coating, and deposited onto the workpiece. Compared with conventional wet plating, ion plating offers superior adhesion and wear resistance.
